Cast Iron Welding Examples
These studies are based on recent jobs passing through our shop. As you will see from the photographs, some have already been tampered with by inexperienced hands
resulting in a failed repair and ultimately costing more to fully resolve.
This is a cylinder head from a Marshall tractor. It came from West Sussex and is the first of four from the same customer. He has four Marshalls of various ages but all with the same fault - cracked heads.
The first pic shows the first stage after cleaning. This is the MPI check for surface cracks. We brush on a white background paint and create a magnetic field over the casting. We then spray on a black magnetic ink which is attracted to any breaks in continuity. The black line in the picture is a crack. This is milled out and welded. After welding the head is blast cleaned and pressure tested, fettled and painted. Every thread is cleaned out and re-tapped.
This head is now fitted on the tractor and the second one is on it's way to us for the same treatment.
